Hi guys,
The time came to buy a new laptop. I really want to get a powerbook 15" with Superdrive but what I do is requiring allot of PC power. I need it for work and what I do is (Actuate reporting, DB2 clients, Oracle clients, Sybase clients, IBM apps such as Lotus notes ect. and ClearCase and some other Rational stuff, also Java web stuff)
I know I can't have it all on Mac it's just won't support all this stuff written for MS.
Is there a way to install an app such as advertized on this forum Pc on Mac to fully support all the apps I need or I might run in to many issues in the future (such as drivers ect.). If I can't do it with Powebook I will have to get Thinkpad T42 or T43 that will run me pretty much the same amount of money. (Thinkpads are good actually very good if not the best but I really wanted to get Powerbook if I can do all I need in it)

I got a new iPhone and want to give my son my 3GS. The guy at Best Buy said I should be able to move his sim card from his 3G to my 3GS and all the info would switch over.
When I move the sim card the 3GS activates but still has my contacts, etc. even though it is his sim card. Help??

I did this years ago on a MacPlus with a dialup account but discovered that MacTCP v2.0.6 would reliably crash.
Downgrading to MacTCP 2.0.4 fixed that problem but I never discovered exactly where or why this conflict occurred.

Does anyone know of a way to enable the true apple voice control on an iPod touch 2g? Is there a plist or something? Let me be clear: I don't want Vocallia or whatever it is, I don't want you to say "the 3rd gen has voice control", which i've seen on many similar forums (which were never resolved). Any ideas?

Are you talking about the macrumors teams specifically, or the projects themselves?

Sorry you disagree, but it's a fact of life... the MP3 format does not support gapless playback inherently, so to speak. Here is a link to an aticle discuss the problem and the solutions to it. http://www.pretentiousname.com/mp3players/ and also a quote from the article, in case someone doesn't want to read it: The MP3 format has inherent flaws which, unless worked around, mean it cannot move seamlessly from one track to the next without adding silence or at least a click. The article then goes into some formats that do support gapless playback (AAC and OGG, for example), and some of the 'hacks' and tricks that players COULD use (but most, including the iPod) to fix the MP3 gapless playback issues.
Since the iPod can't play OGG files (hoping for this in the next revision, like all SLashdotters ;-) ), AAC is the best choice for gapless playback on the iPod.
Rob
EDIT: The author of that article mentions that he is unsure of wether AAC supports gapless playback. I THOUGHT that it did, but I could be wrong, so using AAC may or may not fix this ploblem. I'll try to look into it further what formats support gapless playback that are also supported by the iPod. He goes om further to say that the iPod doesn't support any gapless playback, so it may be that my search for an answer will be in vein.

I'm trying it now. I'm not certain whether I like it or not--for the same reason as I'm not sure I like Aqua--too much blue. :D

It's incredibly difficult to find any technical information on your modem. It's re-branded by phone companies, and I guess they provide their own documentation, if any.
One thing that concerns me is that I found it in one place describe as a "bridge". This means that it does NOT have NAT, and would leave your computer open to attack if you do not use a router between your computer and the modem.
So you really might want to go to ATT and ask them for a list of compatible models that you could buy. Buy one with a built-in router and switch.
I also came across some discussion on how to get this modem to work with a router. It's a bit complicated. Apparently, you need a router that has a "clone MAC address" feature. It appears that it requires a single MAC address to be "registered" - not sure how this is done, whether it has to be done by ATT, etc. But anyway, it will only allow a single MAC address to talk to it, and since your computer is already the registered address, you need a router that can "clone" your computer's MAC address to the WAN side of the modem. Point is, it's set up to work with your computer and your computer only, so you have to fool it into thinking that the router is your computer.
Given the need for "clone MAC address", I don't think it would even work if you switched it between the two computers. Have you actually tried that? I think it might just refuse to talk to the second computer.

Something like this will help: http://www.elgato.com/elgato/na/mainmenu/products/Video-Capture/product1.en.html
But know, that commercial VHS tapes have a copy protection system called Macrovision (http://www.weethet.nl/english/video_macrovision.php), which makes copying VHS tapes to other devices quite hard (http://www.repairfaq.org/filipg/LINK/F_MacroVision1.html#MACROVISION_006), unless one uses some device between the VCR and the recording device.

Another option would be to get a really nice printout of some of your illustration work and photograph various closeup details of it..

I'll start by posting some pics of my desk which I modded the other day to put 2 computer fans in, as the temps would skyrocket with the tower i have in there. First I took an old computer fan and striped its wires. Second i took an old usb cord striped its wires too I wired them up with scotch tape () and was ready to drill. I used a dremel to do the cutting (don't have pic) Finished result
the one at the bottom pulls in cooled air and the one at the top expels hot air. plus it points right at my legs so they stay toasty! Sorry for crumby pics i don't have a great camera right now.

I'm using a D-Link DI-514 I got back in September. It was good when my roommates and I ran 3 desktop PC's and an XBox off it. Since it I got a Powerbook and use airport around the apartment the bitrate drops off during use. The only way I found to fix it is to reset the router. I usually have to do this every other day. Its about what one can expect for 30 bucks. So far today has been good, yesterday I had to reset it twice. The price is good but the performance is definatly lacking.

Guitar Hero without the guitar. Makes perfect sense.
Because the actual guitar hero is really anything like playing a guitar at all? (Disclaimer, I do play guitar and I rarely play Guitar Hero).
I'm impressed, anyway, at the $2.99 pricetag for a major franchise. Doubtless they're interested in the massive opportunity for impulse buying song packs. Does it have over-the-air multi-player?
After playing some Beatles Rock Band over the weekend, I guess it would help my rhythm some, but meh, turning on the dirty channel on my amp and shredding is mostly more fun. :)

Oh yeah, so many times playing this game I've been amazed at the sheer scale of the world. It's like an uber-MMO you play by yourself, but with much MUCH better gameplay.
You're really not restricted in many ways at all. There are some people you just can't kill, but I'm sure that's important to avoid breaking the game. You can go anywhere, do anything you want. You can be good or bad, Famous or Infamous... it's entirely open-ended.
There is a HUGE amount of the world full of completely optional locations, quests, and characters. But don't think that means you'll be left not knowing what the heck to do.
The quest system is fairly robust, and you'll always be able to pick up the main quest at any time. To make that even easier they've even made sure to place rally-points on your map for your active quest. Meaning you are rarely ever left wondering where the heck to go if you want to get back into the main story.
I've done some of the main quest, but I've been adventuring in the game for awhile now (easily 40+ hours) and still feel like this game has a ton of content left for me to explore if I really want to. Best value for your money ever... imho!
That sounds like a the kind of game I could get into. Add that to the FPS list the 360 has going, and the XBLA and I think I'll have to put my radar up for a used 360 pretty soon here... thanks for the input guys!

RATS!!
I was hoping this news would cause Apple Stock to tank.
Nope.
Up 41% for the year, 24% for the month, and 2% on the day at the time of this writing ($64.92/share)
I was broke when Apple Stock was $12/share in 2002. Had I scrounged to buy then I'd be sitting pretty now. I even made that recommendation to friends...
Today I thought the usual anti-Apple fearmongering Wall Street is known for would have hit the stock harder and afford another bargain opportunity.
Oh well...
