I have the 11". While it IS a very nice machine, I can't really get used to the size of the screen. My eyes gets tired looking at it. I also have an iMac 24", another story, another screen. And I have an iPad. The couch-surfing is done with the iPad, and my eyes don't get tired looking at that screen. So as much as I adore the look and feel of the Air, I can't really get used to the screen. So I am really thinking about selling it, and maybe later buy a 13" Air or maybe a MBP. Tough decision, ,'cause the 11" is a beauty.....maybe my problem is the lack of glasses on my nose :p

I certainly believe it is a possibility. Under promise, over deliver. Move to Intel...anyone remember that time frame. Steve came in a wee bit a head of schedule, 6 months, not too shabby.

I hope with the release of Leopard OS X doesn't require a reboot for updates or any sort. I'd also like to save my sessions upon shutting down. All the same windows open and in the same place as I left it. Another one would be a more GUI options for the firewall and perhaps an add-on for snort. I know third party tools exist, but I'd like it to be built into the OS. Widgets that can become part of the the desktop background, but not replace it. I'm sure I could make a huge list of improvements, but these are a few that I'd really like to see done.

Yes, and the option of saving open tabs upon quitting Safari or a prompt like Firefox offers to prevent me from accidentally clicking the red close window button and closing all of my open tabs, instead of the back button.

Not gonna happen. For starters, how do you type in names for your audio tracks when you've got your keyboard swapped for a mixer? :)

    Still, neat idea.

Look at the diagram again. The mixer could be placed below the keyboard, where that trackpad and wrist rests would normally be....

oh, HELL no. Please don't tell me you're serious. Can you actually imagine someone carrying around a portfolio of these plates to lay on their computer? That's worse than an 8" floppy!!!

    Unbelievable.

I pray this never sees the light of day.

    -Clive

I doubt people would carry them around. I think this is more about offering customized MB/MBP input interfaces for specific educational or professional purposes.

I thought a Woodcrest in Single CPU (Cual Core) is similar to the Conroe in performance...

So, IMHO, a Woodcrest (Xeon...ugghh ugly name, that), is only usefull if you are going to use Dual Dual Cores (like the Quad G5).

Or am I missing something here...

No pretty much spot on. The 1333 MHz FSB gives about a 5% boost in Xeons favour.

Why navigate large amounts of poorly-labeled menus and sub-menus when what you need is on the dock?

Even so, I've never clicked on a folder and gone to get a cup of coffee. That only happens on my friends' pc's.

My comments were not about the merits of OS X vs Windows.

My principle point is "first impressions on a new user". It is well documented that Finder is extremely slow and posesses a lot of carbon code.

I have a G4 1.67 mhz 2005 PB. If I hold my cursor down on the documents folder of my dock it takes about 2 - 3 seconds before finder responds.

At work I use a P3 800 mhz windows 2000 machine. If I move the mouse over "Start ->My Documents" I get an instant response listing of files.

I have seen new users do the same thing at Fry's electonics, and walk away thinking that the Apple was a much slower computer than the Windows PC.

Apple really needs to re-write and optimize finder. It's slow and it leaves a negative impression of OS X on new users / switchers. Hopefully Leopard will take care of this but I haven't heard that confirmed.

I figured they were talking about network traffic as well. Where would they get the road traffic information from users? I'd like to see a quality turn-by-turn navigation feature become a standard offering and improved traffic info would be a nice plus.

I didn't interpret it as network traffic. What would be the purpose of "a crowd sourced traffic service"? If the goal is to provide "an improved traffic service", how does that relate to network traffic? Tell Apple which hotspots are overloaded? With what end goal?

On the other hand, I don't know how Apple could be accurately collecting vehicle traffic data without pinpointing the location of your iPhone (e.g. on a local highway) so I guess there's room for interpretation.

As for turn-by-turn GPS, I just bought Navigon and I'm quite pleased with it so far.

I'd be all for something like this. Normal 3D displays are useless to me, I have an eye condition that doesn't allow me to see 3D. So I should at least have SOME 3D fun.

And I was thinking, to cover up your entire macbook pro with the carbon-fiber decal... would that cause excessive over-heating?

Hmm, it seems like this thread has gravitated towards the issue of immigration. :D

This is what I'm thinking: I'm thinking that if we weren't so dependent on foreign sources of crude oil, we wouldn't need costly military bases all over the world to protect our sources of oil; and we wouldn't need to go to war every time a country wants to use a different form of currency to buy crude oil. What would be the situation if WE were the ones exporting energy? What if the United Stated of America, suddenly became the world's number one exporting country of biofuels, such as cyanobacteria diesel fuel? Wouldn't that make a major difference in the health of our empire?

EDIT: Maybe we wouldn't need to be an empire if we were the number one exporter of energy.

I figured they were talking about network traffic as well. Where would they get the road traffic information from users? I'd like to see a quality turn-by-turn navigation feature become a standard offering and improved traffic info would be a nice plus.

For example: After some opt-in, your phone records its GPS locations, finds out what looks like driving based on speed etc., sends the data to Apple, where they use it to find streets that are not in their mapping software, and the most useful thing would be average speed data depending on the time of day. If you are in a traffic jam and want to be helpful, you press a button to send the information right now, not when you are near to some WiFi. So people can be directed on the best routes based on actual average speeds, and they can be sent around traffic jams in real time.

There's no way to distinguish between whether the user is a pedestrian or in a vehicle.
Could be a cyclist flying along roads, or a person jogging, at the same pace as a car stuck in traffic. Has the car stopped because of heavy traffic, or because they can't hold it in any longer!!

There's way to many variables to consider for this to be about them collecting road traffic information.

It's not a trivial problem, but not really _that_ difficult. If it ever goes over 30mph then it's a car, and if it doesn't stop at a stop sign then it's a bicycle :-) Seriously, it's quite possible to sort this out. And there are many iPhones around, so if you have some iPhones at 30 mph and some at 4 mph on the same road, then you know who are drivers and who are pedestrians. If iPhones move at an average of 3 mph through your favourite park, then turn-by-turn software won't direct car traffic there, whether it is pedestrians or enormous traffic jam.

    MacRumors

    http://www.macrumors.com/images/macrumorsthreadlogo.gif (http://www.macrumors.com)

Macworld reports (http://www.macworld.com/2006/11/firstlooks/rosetta/index.php) that based on their benchmarks, Apple's Rosetta PowerPC emulation technology for Intel Macs has seen up to 30% improvements in the latest version of Mac OS X (10.4.8). Rosetta is the technology that allows Intel Macs to run PowerPC applications (such as Photoshop and Microsoft Office) which have not yet been released as Universal Binaries.

Apple released the Mac OS X 10.4.8 update on September 29th, 2006 and incorporated a number of improvements (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304200).

Meanwhile, Apple is continuing work on Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and provided developers with a new seed today (Build 9A303). This latest Leopard build provides ongoing performance improvements and bug fixes, but continues to have a long list of known issues.

While Leopard is officially expected (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060807161421.shtml) to be released in Spring of there has been some questionable speculation (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/10/20061030141713.shtml) that Apple may be targeting an earlier release. Apple's Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) release will certainly draw comparisons with Microsoft's upcoming Windows Vista release. According to the BBC, Vista will be available (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6130604.stm) to retail customers on January 30th, while corporate customers will be able to get the newest version of Windows starting on November 30th, 2006.

The national spirit of the past, which forged the industrial revolution and led to the largest empire ever seen, has long dissipated.

Funny how it comes and goes, right?
